Wiltipolls

Howes Creek Hills Wiltipoll Sheep

Wiltipoll sheep are low maintenance.  They shed their fibre so do not require shearing. Nor do they require mulesing so the breed is not involved in this controversy. They are not subject to footrot.

If you are looking to buy sheep, either ewes, lambs or rams then Wiltipoll Sheep are a great alternative.

The breed is big framed, strong, hardy and resilient. When sold for meat they are best sold over the hooks as the quality of the meat is lean and they dress out well.

Low maintenance, easy care and ideal for people looking for sheep meat. Sheep for sale most times of the year.

The ewes have strong maternal instincts, are good milkers and rear twins and triplets with ease. Some even manage to rear quads unaided.

The Wiltipoll is a prime lamb wool-shedding breed developed in Australia.

The breed is big framed, strong, hardy and resilient. When sold for meat they are best sold over the hooks as the quality of the meat is lean and they dress out well.

The ewes have strong maternal instincts, are good milkers and rear twins and triplets with ease. Some even manage to rear quads unaided.

Ease of care as no need for mulesing , or crutching as they shed their fibre each year.  In their first year they may not fully shed , but do so in their second year.

Most of the sheep are polled but there are still many with small horns which do not present problems.

Ewes are very maternal and protective.  They readily care for multiple birth lambs of which there is a high percentage.

We are finding many sheep farmers,  particularly older farmers are introducing Wiltipolls to their flock or changing to the breed.  They reduce the workload and there is not the need for shearers which are becoming ever more difficult to source.

More popular breeds, such as Dorper and Texel are been crossed with Wiltipoll Sheep to generate hybrid vigour.

The advantages of Wiltipoll Sheep are

  • More Meat
  • More Milk
  • More Lambs
  • No Shearing
  • No Flystrike
  • No Mulesing
  • Less Chemicals
  • Less Hassle

Advantages of wool-shedding

  • Nutrition is directed towards meat and milk – not wool.
  • Costs are cut dramatically – no need to shear or crutch.
  • No jetting, dipping, mulesing or need to tail dock.
  • No chemical treatment needed for fly or lice.
  • Ideal for organic lamb production.
  • Grass seed resistant.
  • Adaptable to arable, pastoral and tropical areas.
Prime Lamb Sires

  • Wiltipoll rams produce lean, strong offspring which are hardy and adaptable.
  • Lambs of superior meat quality are equally suited to domestic or heavy export trade.
  • Wiltipoll cross lambs maintain leanness to heavy weights under feedlot or supplementary feeding conditions with little fat being laid down.
  • Rams will breed all year round and can be crossed with other breeds to produce a prime lamb.
Maternal Traits

  • Wiltipoll ewes come into season in autumn – lambs are born in spring.
  • Ewes lamb easily, milk abundantly and have a high percentage of multiple births.
  • Percentages are usually 150% or better.
  • Ewes may be joined at 6 or 7 months of age but success depends on maturity and condition of ewe at joining.  Better feed at joining time results in more multiple births but twins come consistently from older ewes even on poorer pasture.
